SUMONIUM #1 2020 menghadirkan SUMONIUM (Simposium Sumonar) dengan tema “LOCATING NEW MEDIA ART/ CONTEMPORARY ART: PRACTICE, HISTORY, AND SOCIETY.”

SUMONIUM hadir sebagai forum untuk mempertemukan akademisi, pemangku kebijakan, praktisi, profesional, dan pencinta seni media untuk saling bertukar gagasan, pengalaman atas praktik produksi pengetahuan dan praktik kekaryaan.
SUMONIUM#1 mengetengahkan tema mengenai penempatan seni media baru/seni kontemporer, dalam praktiknya, sejarahnya dan posisinya dalam konteks sosial (masyarakat). Tema ini akan dibicarakan oleh berbagai narasumber baik dari kalangan pemangku kebijakan, akademisi, maupun praktisi. Simposium pertama ini lahir dari SUMONAR: Projection Mapping and Light Art Instalation dengan tajuk “Mantra Lumina” 2020 yang terselenggara dengan baik dan sukses. Sebagai sebuah inisiatif, simposium ini ingin merespons berbagai hal yang masih menjadi pertanyaan pubik mengenai eksistensi, makna dan fungsi seni media baru dalam kaitannya dengan praktik, sejarah dan perkembangan masyarakat di Indonesia dan dunia internasional. Selain itu juga simposium ini akan menjadi wadah bagi praktisi seni media baru terutama yang terkait dan berelasi dengan praktik seni cahaya.

Budi Irawanto, PhD adalah pengajar pada Departemen Ilmu Komunikasi FISIPOL UGM. Menyelesaikan studi S3 di National University of Singapore, pernah menjadi visiting fellow (peneliti tamu) di ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute (Singapura). Ia juga presiden Jogja- NETPAC Asian Film Festival (JAFF), sebuah festival film Asia terbesar di Indonesia. Chapternya ttg film perang, militer dan propaganda di Indonesia baru terbit dalam bunga rampai “Southeast Asia on Screen” oleh Amsterdam University Press.
Dr. Agung Hujatnika, M.Sn., a.k.a Agung Hujatnikajennong, is a lecturer at the Visual Art Study Program, Faculty of Art and Design, Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), Bandung. He obtained his doctorate from his alma mater in 2012. As an independent curator, he has curated major national and international exhibitions since early 2000s to date. He founded ‘Instrumenta – International Media Art Festival’ in Jakarta and was in charge as the Artistic Director (2018-2019). Aside from teaching and researching, he writes for various national mass media, academic journals and exhibition catalogues. His book ‘Kurasi dan Kuasa’, on curatorship and power relations in the Indonesian art world, was published by Marjin Kiri and the Jakarta Arts Council in 2015.
Open systems advocate, technologist, artist and educator Irene Agrivina is graduate from Visual Communication Design program at the Indonesia Institute of Art (ISI), Yogyakarta, and continuing her study at Culture and Religion Magister Program at Sanata Dharma University in Yogyakarta. She is one of the founding members and current directors of HONF, the Yogyakarta based new media and technology laboratory. Created in 1998 as a place of open expression, art and cultural technologies in the wake of the Indonesian “revolution”, HONF aka the ‘House of Natural Fiber’ was born out of the social and political turmoil against the Suharto regime, its nepotism and governmental corruption. Agrivina runs HONF’s ‘Education Focus Programme’ (EFP) which focuses on the application and practical use in daily life of collaborative, cross-disciplinary and technological actions responding to social, cultural and environmental challenges.
In response to the needs of societies in development and transition, HONF and EFP apply open, collaborative and sustainable actions that systematically expand or convert accessible technologies to be used as multifunctional tools and methodologies. She has participated in numerous festivals such as Re;Publica, Transmediale, Pixelache, Mal Au Pixel, New Museum Trienalle, APAP 5. She exhibited her work and gave her lectures at some respectable galleries, museums and universities around the world. At 2011 in collaboration with Waag Society she co-founded HONFablab, as the first Fablab in South East Asia, and at 2013 she founded XXLab an all female collective focusing in arts, science and free technology as a HONF’s spin-off communities, one of their project, SOYA C(O)U(L)TURE (2015) was crowned as the winner of 2015 Prix Ars Electronica awards, a prestigious European Commission-supported competition for cyberarts in Linz, Austria. She was also chosen by Asialink, Australia as one of The Six Women in Pioneer from South East Asia
Jeong Ok Jeon is a Jakarta-based Korean curator and educator who is actively engaging in South East Asian contemporary art, especially working on providing international exposures for regional artists in and outside of Indonesia. Jeon worked as a curator in an alternative art space called SSamzie Space in Korea in the early 2000s; after moving to the United States, Washington D.C. Metropolitan area in 2005, she worked as an independent curator focusing on promoting Asian art and artists in the US. Since relocating to Indonesia in 2011, she has been passionately involved in both contemporary art scene and art academy for the past nine years. With interests in new media and interactive art, she has curated numerous science and technology based art exhibitions. She earned an MFA from the Savannah College of Art and Design in the US and a BFA from Ewha Womans University in Korea. Jeon currently serves as the director at ARCOLABS–Center for Art and Community Management and a full-time lecturer at the department of Visual Art Education, Faculty of Language and Arts at Jakarta State University. www.arcolabs.org / ig @arcolabs.id
Krack! adalah studio dan galeri seni print/grafis di Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Didirikan oleh Malcolm Smith, Prihatmoko Moki, Rudi Hermawan, dan Sukma Smita pada Maret 2013, kegiatan mereka meliputi: pameran, workshop, seniman wicara (artist talk), dan residensi. Krack! seringkali membuat proyek kolaborasi dengan beberapa seniman, baik junior ataupun senior, mereka sangat terbuka untuk terlibat pada proyek yang lebih luas. Beberapa proyek yang sudah dilakukan antara lain: mencetak karya seniman senior Indonesia untuk Biennale Yogyakarta, membuat proyek seni kolaboratif baik dengan seniman maupun peneliti, bekerja sebagai kurator pameran, memfasilitasi studio untuk proses belajar seniman lokal yang tertarik membuat karya print/grafis, mengurus program residensi (open studio), sampai mencetak poster untuk band-band dan artis lokal dengan edisi terbatas. Krack! Memiliki ketertarikan dalam membuat karya visual yang inovatif dan beredisi. Mereka juga menanggapi secara kritis berbagai peristiwa, perkembangan, dan perdebatan budaya di kawasan Asia Pasifik.
László Zsolt Bordos, also known as Bordos.ArtWorks, is an artist living in Budapest, Hungary. During his studies at the Academy of Art in Budapest and Medialab UIAH Helsinki, he started to do projections in year 2000, performing in the underground party culture of Budapest. With his early 3d-vjing (2001-2004), with his participation to huge size architectural slide projections (2002-2006) and his outrageous video projections and 3d mapping projects (2007-present), he became a pioneer of the genre. Since 2015 Bordos is focusing on solo art projects, light art installations and scenery projections for theatre and opera. Being an active participant at the light art festivals around the globe, he has shown his works in over 40 countries

Motionhouse Indonesia is a multi-platform Visual Lab, founded in 2011. Motionhouse explores creative works from corporate events, to entertainment industry that uses motion graphics as medium of delivering information and media expression. Modulight is a sub studio from Motionhouse, founded in 2017, focusing in exploration of art & technology to connect generations of people thru’ new media, and to push the limitless possibilities in collaboration with multi-disciplines artists and designers.
Raphael Donny adalah seniman visual dan spesialis projection mapping yang saat ini tinggal di Yogyakarta dan Jakarta, Indonesia. Sekitar tahun 2002 ia mulai mengeksplorasi seni visual sebagai visual jockey (VJ) untuk electronic dance party dan klub malam. Setidaknya mulai dari rave party lokal seperti Volcano High dan Jungle Beat hingga international dance festival seperti Embassy Playground, Djakarta Warehouse Project, dan Gatecrasher, telah divisualisasikan oleh real-time visual mixing signature-nya. Dia percaya bahwa musik yang dihasilkan oleh DJ atau performer dapat langsung divisualkan, sehingga audiens dapat memiliki pengalaman audio-visual yang spektakuler. Dari visinya untuk membawa pengalaman visual yang tak terlupakan, Raphael terpilih sebagai REDMA 2010 VJ Of the Year oleh sebuah elektronic dance forum bergengsi, Ravelex.
Untuk mengekspresikan passionnya dalam seni visual, Raphael Donny telah berkolaborasi dengan berbagai seniman dari disiplin seni lain seperti grup teater, penari, pemain musik, dan perancang busana untuk melakukan beberapa proyek seni. Dia memiliki proyek seni serialnya sendiri bernama l’Obscura, sebuah medium untuk mengeksplorasi tentang bagaimana cahaya bisa ada -atau tiada- untuk membawa ilusi dalam bentuk karya seni. Dimulai pada 2007, karya seni serial L’Obscura telah dipamerkan di beberapa pameran seni publik seperti Nandur Srawung dan ArtJog.
Sejak 2013, Raphael mulai mengembangkan proyeksi publik tentang fasad arsitektur dan monumen menggunakan teknik video mapping bersama rekan-rekannya di Jogjakarta Video Mapping Project (JVMP), sebuah kolektif seni yang berfokus pada video mapping movement. Karya video mappingnya telah diproyeksikan di sebagian besar bangunan cagar budaya di Yogyakarta; seperti BNI46, Bank Indonesia, Kantor Pos, Monumen Tugu, Panggung Krapyak, Taman Budaya Yogyakarta, dll; dan pada beberapa landmark penting di Jakarta seperti Istana Merdeka (Istana Kepresidenan), Monumen Nasional (Monas), Katedral Jakarta, dll. Dia juga memprakarsai kolaborasi kelompok seniman multidisiplin, MöDAR, yang telah berpartisipasi dalam berbagai festival video mapping internasional di seluruh dunia seperti 1-minute Projection Mapping di Niigata, Jepang, Kyiv Light Festival di Ukraina, Genius-Loci Weimar di Jerman, dan Art Vision Circle of Light Moscow International Light Festival – di mana mereka memenangkan posisi ketiga pada Classic Nomination di tahun 2018. Raphael Donny aktif dalam gerakan pengembangan video mapping di Indonesia.
Rizki Lazuardi (b. 1982) adalah seorang seniman media dan kurator yang banyak bekerja dengan instalasi moving image dan expanded cinema. Lazuardi menyelesaikan pendidikan post-grad film dan time-based media di HFBK University of Fine Arts Hamburg. Baik karya dan program yang telah dikuratorinya telah dipresentasikan di banyak pameran, festival, institusi, maupun offspace di Indonesia dan luar negri, antara lain, Jakarta Biennale, Image Forum Tokyo, IFFR Rotterdam, Klubvizija Zagreb, OK Video Jakarta, dan YCAM Yamaguchi. Saat ini Lazuardi menjadi advisor program film Asia Tenggara di Arsenal Berlin untuk Berlinale Forum 2021.
A.Sudjud Dartanto
Studied at Faculty of Visual Art, Indonesia Institute of The Arts (ISI), Yogyakarta, and finished his Master in Cultural Studies (IRB) from Sanata Dharma University, Indonesia. He is teaching at Art Management Departement(some subjects are Semiotic, Art Critic, and Art History), Visual Art Faculty, ISI Yogyakarta. Untill now he is as one of board of curators at National Gallery Indonesia, and active in research, writing and curating. He selected in the curatorial residency program, organized by Institute of Modern Art (IMA), Brisbane, Australia, 2013, and Artist Initiative Tokyo (AIT), Japan, 2013.
As international guest curator for “Trajectory”, MAGNT (Museum and Gallery of Northern Territory), Darwin, Australia, 2008, “U(dys)topia”, HfBk (Hochschule für Bildende Künste) gallery, Dresden, Freies Museum, Berlin, Germany, 2010. In the experience of curating bienalle he has Co-curated “Neo-nation”, the 9th Yogyakarta Biennale, 2007, curated “Jakarta Contemporay Ceramic Bienalle” (JCCB) II in 2012. Actively curates and co-curates national and international exhibition in National Gallery Indonesia, such as MULTIPOLAR, Art after Reformation Era, 2018.
Involved in international research based project such as “Pedagogy of the Unknown”, Art and Archaeological Project, an interdisplinary project, on Sungai Batu site, Penang, Malaysia, “South Project”, the 5th International south-south Gathering organised by the South Project, Australia, 2009. In new media exhibition he has curated SUMONAR, Light Art (Video Mapping and Interactive Visual Art) Festival, Yogyakarta, 2019, and co-curated SINKRONIK, Pekan Seni Media, Samarinda, Kalimantan Timur, 2019.
Evelyn Huang
Evelyn Huang (b. 1984) is an Indonesian curator and lecturer who pursues knowledge as a never ending path for her life. Evelyn graduated with an MFA in Creative Entrepreneurship from Jakarta Institute of Arts after she obtained her Master’s Degree in Cultural Studies, University of Indonesia. In recent years, she has curated EXI(S)T, one of the most renowned art incubation programs in Indonesia. Aside from her full time position as Program Head in IDS – International Design School, she also curates media art exhibitions and international exchange exhibitions for ARCOLABS.
